What is Aokage Castle?
Aokage Castle is a mountain castle located in Nakasho-cho, Innoshima, Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. It stands on the summit of Mt. Aokage, at an altitude of 275.7m, almost in the center of Innoshima. It is also known as Aokage Castle, Aokage Castle, Aokage Castle, and Aokageyama Castle, and was designated a Hiroshima Prefecture Historic Site in 1957.
Built on Innoshima, a key point for maritime traffic in the Seto Inland Sea, this castle served as an important military base for the Innoshima Murakami Suigun (Murakami Pirates) for approximately 260 years, from the Genko era (1331-1333) to the first year of the Keicho era (1596). Currently, the remains of the main keep, baileys, and moats are well-preserved, and the mountaintop is known as a scenic spot offering panoramic views of the entire Innoshima Island, the surrounding sea, and the Innoshima Bridge of the Shimanami Kaido.
